Does your dad work hard? Does he like to play sports and complain of back pains?
Does your dad work hard? Does he like to play sports and complain of back pains?
Anxiety. For some people, just seeing the word can bring a change in the way we feel – heart racing, shortness of breath, uncomfortable feelings in the gut – to name a few. But anxiety doesn’t have to be an everyday friend. Whether you experience more mild anxiety than you would like when standing up to give a presentation or if you have a tendency for extreme anxiety, potentially from trauma, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be a tool to ease your suffering.
From the Chinese medicine perspective of anxiety, there are different ways that one might have anxiety and this gives the acupuncturist insight into what needs assistance in order to specifically help each individual. Below are a few examples of the patterns of anxiety.
Is it in the genes?
Ever feel like you were just born with it?! There may be genetic factors with a personality type that leaves you with the tendency to have anxiety. This often leads to timidity, or a hesitation to make decisions, experience fatigue and general tiredness, have nightmares, palpitations, shortness of breath and/or poor appetite.
Why do I feel so frail?
Others might have noticeable heart palpitations with a kind of empty sensation in chest. This type of person may also have poor concentration and bad memory, blurred vision, pale face, spots in the visual field, dream disturbed sleep and if a female – scanty menstruation. In severe cases, there may be tremors or intense shaking of the hands.
Why do I feel weak in the bottom half of my body while everything is buzzing away up top?!
Another possibility is to have heart palpitations, but this time with an empty sensation in the lower part of the body. There may be a tendency to have hot flashes, experience dizziness, fainting, tinnitus, spontaneous sweating or palm sweating. People with these symptoms may also have a tendency for insomnia, tachycardia, and diffuse low back pain.
These are a just a few examples of the different pattern types of anxiety that can be helped by acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. If you’ve never been to an acupuncturist, you will find the intake form to be quite long because although Western medicine may not see different symptoms necessarily relating, Chinese medicine has thousands of years of witnessing patterns of symptoms that tell a story of the internal terrain of each individual. These pattern types are guides for each acupuncturist to root out the source cause in order to apply the most effective individualized treatment plan.
Typically, anxiety is not a one stop shop quick fix type of issue. Treatment plans can involve acupuncture, Chinese herbs, dietary recommendations, mindfulness awareness practices, movement/exercise recommendations (as with almost all chronic issues), as well as incorporating other therapies. The body can take a major hit from chronic anxiety, so one can try things like massage to reduce stress, chiropractic care to keep your signals firing correctly and to insure that oxygen is getting to the brain, or you might even need to get your blood work done to be sure you aren’t lacking any important nutrients and to be sure that your hormones are properly balanced.
Remember, even if this seems overwhelming, you are already living life overwhelmed, might as well have a team of people to support you and help take the edge off of life!
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act. Our Mental health helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
So, how can Massage Therapy help with Mental Health? When someone struggles with Mental health their muscles and connective tissues become stiff or rigid, which can cause pain and limit your movement. Massage therapy can help relieve this tension in your muscles and connective tissues. It also increases your blood flow and promotes relaxation.
Massage therapy has been shown to reduce levels of cortisol, a stress related neurohormone and increase the levels of serotonin and dopamine that have a positive effect on your mood. Massage encourages sleep which helps in tissue repair, regeneration and healing.
If you struggle with anxiety or depression, massage therapy paired with other treatments with your Primary Care, Chiropractic Care, Acupuncturists or Psychologist/Psychiatrist can be of great benefit for you. Massage therapy alone will not cure a mental disorder. Most will find that it provides immediate gratification. You may feel relaxed and calm from the time your massage begins.
Breathing isn’t a learned skill. For the most part, your subconscious mind takes care of your breathing while you tend to more pressing matters. Yet, despite its automatic nature, you can consciously control your breathing- when you breath, how fast you breathe and what you breathe (to a point).
The primary purpose of breathing is to get oxygen to the cells. Cells need oxygen in order to function. They take oxygen to use in their functioning and as they function, they produce carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a waste product, that must be eliminated, so that the cells can fill with oxygen. The purpose of breathing is to bring in new oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Your blood cells can carry the largest amount of oxygen when your internal environment is slightly alkaline. Therefore, it is important to dispose of carbon dioxide as quickly as possible.
What choices do you have in the breathing category? The most obvious is the smoking choice! This is an easy one- DON’T SMOKE! Smoking dumps potentially lethal toxins into the body, which go directly to the blood stream without being processed through physiological protective mechanisms.
Choices of the type of environmental air you breathe are not so clear-cut. However, you do have some choices. You have some say in where you live and where you work. The decision to accept a job in a chemically-intense environment is a conscious choice. The decision to smoke or not to smoke cigarettes, as well as to live in an area of heavy air pollution or not, is a conscious choice. Your decisions are a matter of priorities.
Respiratory toxicity, whether it is from smoking or environmental pollution. Imposes severe stress on the body. That stress can cause an exacerbation, weakening or exhaustion of vulnerable organs and systems which are trying to cope with other stresses. This additional stress on your systems can push the body to the point of disease. If you suffer with severe respiratory allergies or other respiratory diseases, quality of life can be synonymous with quality of air.
The trick is to keep a healthful balance in the choices you make. When you make mostly correct choices, there is room for slippage on occasion. When you habitually make choices that allow your body to be in the best shape possible, your body can handle the occasional “incorrect choice”, your body is fighting an uphill battle at all times and there is little margin for error.
Your best bet for health is balance! Balance of the run-and- rest processes of your organ systems, as well as balance in the alkaline-acid internal environment of your body. Balances in your choices of the air you breathe and the food you eat. Give your body the best internal environment possible for it to do what it does best- function perfectly for survival!

Your thyroid is located above the Adam’s apple, your thyroid produces thyroid hormone (TH), which regulates, among other things, your body’s temperature, metabolism and heart. WOW!!! The thyroid-that little gland does all that? Yes, it does.
In healthy people, the thyroid makes just the right amounts of two hormones, T3 and T4. These hormones have important actions throughout the body. Most importantly, they regulate many aspects of our metabolism, affecting how many calories we burn how warm we feel, how much we weigh… and our general well being.
In today’s world, people are uneducated as to what a Chiropractor does. Chiropractors are much more than just cracking backs. When it comes to Thyroid and autoimmune thyroid conditions, Chiropractors are about balancing the nervous system. And the nervous system innervates every cell and tissue in the body. So, there happens to be “interference” with the nerves which innervate the thyroid gland, then this possibly can result in malfunctioning of the thyroid gland.
If your thyroid is under or over active, things can start to go wrong. If it is sluggish, it produces too little TH; amped- up and it produces too much. So, what exactly causes this gland to go erratic? There are a lot of things that can cause it to go haywire.. Such as, an autoimmune attack, pregnancy, stress, nutritional deficiencies, toxins in the environment and it could even be genetics. Therefore, because the thyroid hormones extend across the body- from brain to bowels- it is difficult to diagnose a thyroid disorder.
If someone has a nervous system that is out of balance, since the nervous system controls the immune system, then this person very well might have an immune system that is out of balance as well. As a result this weakened immune system, the person will be more likely to develop a chronic infection, which in turn can trigger an autoimmune response. Or it could be a nervous system imbalance which could be making the person more susceptible to the effects of stress, which in turn can cause leaky gut, which in turn can cause an autoimmune thyroid condition.
Symptoms that you could be experiencing with a thyroid condition:
Have you currently been on medication for a thyroid condition? Still feeling the same after years of medication? Been to the doctor with any of the following signs and symptoms and still no answers?
Dr. Josh Rowden is also fed up!
“It is a disturbing trend that I observe concerning the management of thyroid conditions.. -the disturbing trend: most thyroid sufferers are managed EXACTLY the same! This really bothers me because I understand from my KNOWLEDGE of NEUROLOGY that no two people react the same… especially with the endocrine dysfunction.”
-Dr. Josh Rowden
We can support and manage your thyroid condition naturally and you may not need any medication at all. Don’t get us wrong, OUR OFFICE will NEVER tell you to stop taking your current medications. NWA Health Solutions actually work WITH your PCP to get you feeling better as quickly as possible. How?
We use very specific blood tests, which may include any or all of the following, depending on the individual. Here at NWA Health Solutions, we want to see your blood work, our Doctors want to dig deep into the root of your issue.
We also test to see if you have an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease is where your immune system attacks a particular area of the body (like the thyroid, for instance), so we test for specific thyroid antibodies to determine if YOU suffer from an autoimmune thyroid disease.
We can also check for gluten antibodies, myelin (fatty sheath around the nerves) antibodies, cerebellar (back part of the brain controlling balance, coordinated movement, and spinal muscles) antibodies.
Additionally we can test your adrenal glads (small glads on top of the kidners)via an Adrenal Stress Index (ASI), as many thyroid sufferers also suffer from adrenal problems.
Every new client we work with begins with a case review and consultation. When you schedule your case review and consultation, we will send you our comprehensive case history and dietary and nutritional questionnaire. This allows us to learn everything about your case and your history.
During the initial consultation we are going to thoroughly discuss your case and talk about the dietary, lifestyle and supplemental changes we can make immediately to make a positive impact on your condition.
We are also going to discuss the specific lab tests that will give us the specific information needed to uncover the causes of your condition.
Then we will make VERY specific lifestyle, nutrition and supplemental changes according to the results of your labs, custom tailored to your EXACT NEEDS.
Usually we will prescribe you a series of diet, lifestyle and supplemental changes and then schedule another consultation in the future. This will allow us to review your progress, review your most recent lab findings and move onto the next phase of care.
For us here at NWA Health Solutions, we are finding it is so rare that people know everything Chiropractors can do and treat. EDUCATION is key and teaching others about what we do is something we are going to strive to do. Here at NWA Health Solutions we don’t just crack backs. Our Doctors here do so much more than adjustments and we are here to educate you on all our services. Over the next several weeks we are going to discuss different health issues and concerns and how a person experiencing these can benefit from Chiropractic Care.

First of all, what is a Chiropractor? It is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Doctors of Chiropractic practice hands-on, drug-free approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling. Every Chiropractor is different and can do different treatments depending on their level of training and education.
The goal of chiropractic is to treat the origin of a condition, not the symptoms of a condition. Chiropractors get to the root of the problem; why does this condition exist? This approach is very different than that of a medical doctor. Today’s medicine treats symptoms that are associated with certain conditions, whereas chiropractors figure out where those symptoms originate from and treat the underlying condition. There are many conditions that chiropractic can treat without drugs or surgery. There are also many conditions that are not directly treated by chiropractic but are indirectly affected.

Our Spinal Decompression Therapy Program is a proven method of treatment for herniated disc, bulging disc, sciatic pain, and more. This program is designed specifically to heal the low back, not just mask the pain. Taking pain medication or undergoing risky spinal surgery is not the only option for low back pain. We treat the underlying conditions present in the low back, not just the symptoms.
Decompression Therapy works with the vertebrae, inter-vertebral discs and spinal nerves traveling up and down the spine. It is designed to traction the spine, decompressing the vertebrae, allowing the discs to pull in more oxygen and nutrients. By applying traction to the vertebrae in the low back, they allow the discs to act like a vacuum and draw the bulge/herniation back into the disc. This is the number one way to treat a disc bulge without surgery.
